MOC - LEGO Technic 42198 C Model - Safari Helicopter

When it comes to LEGO Technic, I love the challenge of creating alternative builds (C Models) that push the boundaries of what a set can do. My latest creation, the Safari Helicopter, is built entirely from the pieces of LEGO Technic 42198 - Bush Plane, making it a true C Model that doesn’t require any extra parts.

Design & Features
Rotors & Engine Integration
One of the standout features of this build is the functional connection between the main rotor blades and the flat-four engine. As the rotors spin, the pistons move, adding an extra layer of mechanical realism to the model. This was a key element I wanted to include, as it brings the technical charm that Technic fans appreciate.

Working Landing Gear
A helicopter isn’t complete without functional landing gear. In this design, both the front and rear landing gear lift and lower simultaneously, providing a smooth and realistic mechanism. The synchronization took some fine-tuning, but I’m really pleased with how well it works.

Sticker Integration & Aesthetic Challenges
One of the unique challenges of creating a C Model is working with the pre-applied stickers from the A Model. Rather than seeing this as a limitation, I embraced it, carefully designing the bodywork to complement the original sticker placement. This meant rethinking panel positioning multiple times, allowing the model to evolve organically as I built it.

Color Scheme & Final Thoughts
At first, I wasn’t sure how the black, white, and yellow colour scheme from the Bush Plane would translate to a helicopter, but I think it works surprisingly well. The zebra-like patterns and the “Wildlife Service” branding give it a distinct, safari-ready look, making it stand out from traditional helicopter builds.

I’m incredibly happy with how this turned out. It’s a unique take on a Technic helicopter, packed with functionality and built only from parts included in 42198.

The LEGO Technic 42197 Skid Steer Loader is an impressive alternate model, designed by "east_brick_customs", that makes excellent use of the parts available in the set. Designed as a compact yet functional construction vehicle, this C-model showcases the flexibility and creativity possible with LEGO Technic builds.

Design & Aesthetics
The model follows a classic skid steer loader design, featuring a predominantly yellow and black colour scheme that aligns well with real-life construction equipment. The compact form factor is well-proportioned, and the designer has managed to create a sturdy, realistic-looking frame. The use of LEGO lift arms and connectors gives it an authentic industrial feel.

Functionality
Despite being a C-model, this Skid Steer Loader doesn't compromise on functionality. It includes:

- Articulated bucket movement – The front bucket can be raised and tilted, replicating the movements of a real skid steer.

- Rear-mounted mechanism – This model incorporates a simple mechanism at the rear, representing a ripper.

- Steering system – Though simplified compared to official LEGO sets, the steering mimics the skid steer operation effectively.

Build Experience
The construction process is enjoyable, offering a good balance between simplicity and technical complexity. The model primarily uses liftarms, axles, and connectors, making it a rewarding experience for builders who enjoy Technic mechanisms. It is a great example of how alternate models can bring new life to an existing set.

The LEGO Technic 42198 - Bush Plane is an excellent small-scale Technic model that delivers a satisfying building experience with great playability.

Build Experience

The build process is very enjoyable, striking a great balance between complexity and accessibility. It offers a fun and engaging assembly without being overwhelming, making it ideal for both newcomers to Technic and experienced builders looking for a quick and rewarding project.

Design & Aesthetics

Visually, the Bush Plane looks fantastic. The combination of Technic beams and panels gives it a rugged yet realistic appearance, fitting well within the adventure and exploration theme. The colour scheme and details add to the appeal, making it a great display piece even at this smaller scale.

Functionality

One of the highlights of this model is its proper Technic function—the moving propeller and pistons, which operate using a mechanism similar to the 8232 Chopper Force set. This mechanical feature adds depth to the play value and makes the model feel like a true Technic creation rather than just a static display.

Value for Money

For its price, the Bush Plane offers exceptional value. It packs a lot into a relatively small set, from a well-thought-out design to functional mechanical elements, making it a fantastic purchase for Technic fans.

Customization & C-Model Potential

One of the most exciting aspects of this set is its potential as a base for alternative models (C-models). With its solid frame and versatile part selection, builders could easily rework it into other aircraft, such as a different style of bush plane or even a helicopter.

LEGO Technic 42203 - Attachment - Rubbish Loader

Custom Attachment: The Rubbish Loader

This is the first of my modifications / attachments for the LEGO Technic 42203 Tipping Dump Truck. As part of this attachment, I’ve removed the original tilt tray and replaced it with a fixed rear tray, allowing for a more stable and functional design. The sides have also been removed and completely redesigned to better accommodate the rubbish loader mechanism. This same mounting standard will be used for all future attachments.

Key Features:
- Bin Loader from LEGO 42167: The rubbish loader is adapted from the mechanism found in set 42167, with some modifications to improve functionality and integration with the truck.

- Opening Top: The top section can be opened to allow access to the waste compartment, making it easy to load and unload.

- Front Storage Area: A dedicated space at the front of the truck for carrying spare bins, adding to the realism and playability.

Secure Mounting System: The entire attachment slides on and off the truck’s chassis and is secured at the front using a pin, ensuring stability while allowing for easy removal and swapping with future attachments.

Next Steps:
This is just the first of my planned attachments for the 42203 truck. I’m exploring additional modifications and attachments to further enhance its versatility.

Mini Review - LEGO Technic 42197 - Mini Backhoe Loader

LEGO Technic 42197 - Mini Backhoe Loader: Is This Even Technic?

LEGO Technic Set 42197 - Mini Backhoe Loader really stretches the definition of a Technic set. With only one real function—the bucket raising and lowering—it feels more like an advanced LEGO City build than a proper Technic model.

While the single function works well, the lack of mechanical complexity is disappointing. Manually moving pieces doesn’t count as a function, and without many gears, pneumatics, or a proper linkage system, this set lacks the engineering depth expected from Technic.

Overall, it feels like a simplified take on construction equipment, but not something that lives up to the Technic name. If you're after a true Technic experience, this one might not cut it. It was a easy build and for somebody taking the first steps in to the Technic world, it is easy enough to build, but it also does not really "show off" what Technic is all about.

MOC - LEGO Technic 42203 C-Model - Road Grader

LEGO Technic sets are always a source of inspiration for custom builds, and the LEGO Technic 42203 is no exception. While the official A model offers some good functionality, the true beauty of Technic lies in the ability to create alternate builds (C-models) that push the limits of what the available parts can do. One such build is the Road Grader, a construction machine that levels and smooths surfaces.

Concept and Design
The idea behind the Road Grader was to maximize the use of the truck's parts, while introducing a functional blade mechanism, rippers and steering. Road graders are essential in construction and roadwork, making them a perfect subject for a LEGO Technic alternate model. The challenge was ensuring a realistic blade movement while keeping the structure stable and maintaining playability.

Key Features of the Build
- Steering: The grader includes a steering mechanism often seen in real-world graders, providing precise manoeuvrability. This can be controlled via the steering wheel inside the cabin or via the top exhaust funnel.

- Adjustable Grading Blade: The build includes a blade that can be raised and lowered simulate grading functions.

- Rear Ripper Attachment: An added ripper tool at the back can simulate breaking up tough ground before grading.
The design and building process took about 10 hours, across a few days.

Final Thoughts
This C-model of the LEGO Technic 42203 dumping tip truck, takes these parts and makes them into a detailed and functional Road Grader. It captures the essence of real construction equipment while staying true to the Technic philosophy of engineering and creativity. If you own the 42203 set and are looking for a fresh challenge, this build is a fantastic way to expand your LEGO experience.

The LEGO Technic Monster Jam ThunderROARus Pull-Back (set 42200) offers an engaging building experience for young enthusiasts, blending the thrill of monster trucks with the creativity of LEGO construction. Designed for builders aged 7 and up, this 232-piece set captures the essence of the dinosaur-inspired ThunderROARus monster truck, complete with scales, spikes, and teeth reminiscent of its real-life counterpart. 

Key Features:
- Pull-Back Mechanism: The set features a functional pull-back motor, allowing the truck to zoom forward, adding dynamic playability and enabling kids to recreate exciting Monster Jam stunts. 
- Authentic Design Elements: The model showcases intricate details such as realistic tires and a robust frame, capturing the rugged aesthetics of actual monster trucks. 

Pros:
- Interactive Play: The pull-back feature enhances the play experience, making it more interactive and enjoyable for children. 
- Educational and Fun Value: Building the set aids in developing fine motor skills and introduces basic engineering concepts through hands-on assembly.

Cons:
- Design Gaps: Sadly, the model's structure leaves visible gaps, particularly beneath the open mouth, which may affect the overall aesthetic appeal. 
- Sticker Reliance: The set heavily depends on stickers for detailing, which might not be as durable over time compared to printed pieces. I also found these stickers a bit hard to get on well.

Conclusion:
The LEGO Technic Monster Jam ThunderROARus Pull-Back set is a delightful addition for young builders and Monster Jam fans alike. While it has minor design shortcomings, its interactive features and educational benefits make it a worthwhile purchase for those seeking a fun and constructive activity. As with all the monster trucks in this series, the build was enjoyable and the end result is much the same as with all other monster trucks, they all just have a slightly different look about them.

Review - LEGO Technic 42203 - Tipping Dump Truck

The LEGO Technic 42203 Tipping Dump Truck is a 462-piece set released in March 2025, designed for builders aged 9 and up. This model offers an engaging building experience and functional features that mimic those of real-life dump trucks.

Design and Build

Measuring approximately 28 cm in length and 11 cm in width, the Tipping Dump Truck showcases a realistic and appealing design. The use of dark blue elements is notable, as this colour is seldom employed in unlicensed Technic sets, adding to the model's visual appeal. The flat-fronted cab is modelled exceptionally well without resorting to System pieces to achieve the shape. Stickers are used for hazard stripes, branding, and number plates but are not essential for the overall aesthetic.

Functional Features

The set incorporates several functional elements:

• Steering Mechanism: A knob on the cab roof allows for easy steering, enabling users to manoeuvre the truck into position.

• Tipping Bed: The bed can be raised by turning a gear on the side, and the end flap opens automatically as it rises, simulating the dumping process of a real truck.

• Opening Cab Doors: Both cab doors are functional, providing access to the interior and enhancing the model's realism.

While these features are well-implemented, some enthusiasts have expressed a desire for additional functionalities, such as a moving engine, tilting cab, or suspension system, to enhance the building experience and playability. I have noticed that some AFOL have already developed versions with some of these changes.
