Review - LEGO Technic 42121 B Model - Tracked Tractor with Backhoe

Here's my review of the LEGO Technic 42121 B‑Model—the Tracked Tractor with Backhoe—which is the official alternate build using the same set pieces as the Heavy‑Duty Excavator.

🚜 Overview & Build

  • The B‑Model transforms the excavator into a full tracked tractor with a functioning backhoe arm and articulated steering Instructions are provided online, since the printed booklet covers only the A‑model.

  • Build starts with the backhoe and chassis and progresses through integrating steering and digging functions. Many stickers are applied as part of the build sequence, minimizing misplaced decals.

⚙️ Functionality & Play Features

  • Features both rear articulated steering and a backhoe arm with dual axes of motion. The arm replicates similar B‑model use of the mini linear actuators from the A‑model, but typically with simpler linkages

  • When you roll the model, the hidden engine pistons move, giving an extra touch of realism

  • Overall articulation and mechanistic control are less complex than the main model, but still satisfying.

πŸ’‘ Design & Aesthetics

  • The tracked tractor design is visually appealing for a B‑model—even described as “almost good enough to be a main model in its own right”

  • Sticker application is well-integrated; you apply them as each part is placed into final position, keeping things intuitive I noticed some minor oddities such as occasional upside‑down sticker placements that aren’t visible, but they’re intentional design choices.

🧩 Suitability & Verdict

  • At 569 pieces, this B‑model represents strong value—effectively giving you an extra model to build after finishing the excavator.

  • Ideal for Technic beginners or casual builders who appreciate functional mechanical models without the complexity or size of larger Technic sets.

  • For its size and price, this alternate build is impressively functional and nearly worth building instead of the main model.

🎯 Final Thoughts

The 42121 Tracked Tractor with Backhoe B‑Model delivers a surprisingly compelling alternative experience compared to the main excavator build. While the mechanisms are simpler, the addition of steering and the strong aesthetic design make it stand out among alternate builds in this price and size range. If you’re seeking extended play or display options from the same set, this B‑model is a fantastic bonus—one that could even be the primary use of the set for many builders, such as myself.
